Mkomazi
Mkomazi National Park is one of Tanzania’s lesser-known gems, nestled in the northeastern corner of the country between the Pare and Usambara mountains and the Kenyan border. Sharing an unfenced boundary with Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park, Mkomazi offers a seamless extension of this wild ecosystem. Its dry climate and rugged, mountainous surroundings—often offering views of the towering Kilimanjaro—create a landscape that feels untouched by time.
With just a few tented camps, Mkomazi remains a quiet, secluded haven for those seeking an intimate connection with nature. Covering 3,234 square kilometers—about the size of Mallorca or Joshua Tree National Park in California—it is one of Tanzania’s smaller parks but holds great treasures. Here, you can witness the rare Beisa Oryx, long-necked Gerenuk, and the elusive Lesser Kudu, alongside elephants, giraffes, and lions. These animals thrive in Mkomazi's unique ecosystem, and sightings become especially rewarding during the dry season.
Mkomazi is also home to two black rhino sanctuaries, where this endangered species is being carefully reintroduced after nearly disappearing from the region. There’s also a wild dog breeding center dedicated to protecting these incredible predators. The sanctuaries offer an opportunity to witness conservation in action.
Mkomazi is a place where the wild still reigns, and every visit feels like a step into a world few travelers ever get to see. Browse the photo-gallery below to get an idea of Mkomazi’s landscape and wildlife or return to the destinations overview by clicking here.
