Shu'Mata camp and Kilimanjaro

Enduimet

The Enduimet Wildlife Management Area (WMA) lies off the beaten path in Tanzania’s otherwise busy “Northern Circuit”. Overlooking the vast savannah of the Maasai land, confined only by Kilimanjaro, Meru, and smaller mountains like Longido, it’s hard to believe that Arusha and Moshi—Tanzania’s main tourist hubs—are each only two hours away.

Enduimet is not a national park; it’s a Wildlife Management Area (WMA). A WMA combines the conservation principles of a national park with the interests of local communities. It creates a protected area for wildlife without displacing the local population. In the case of Enduimet this means allowing the Maasai to share their land with wild animals and vice versa.

Bordering Kilimanjaro and Arusha National Parks, as well as Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, Enduimet is a haven for wildlife, which roams freely between these protected areas. A unique highlight is the chance to encounter one of the Amboseli super-tuskers, rare elephant bulls with tusks so long they seem to sweep the ground.

Browse the photo-gallery below to get a glimpse of the breathtaking views over the vast land and the natural beauty of this place. The camp in the photos is Shu'mata Camp, named after the Maasai word for "heaven," reflecting its elevated location and serene surroundings. Shu’mata embodies responsible tourism through its numerous conservation and community initiatives.
